Our Mission

Albertans must work together to protect our water, mountains, and future.

We strongly encourage all Albertans to learn about the long-term, downstream impact of open-pit coal mining in the Eastern Slopes of the Rocky Mountains.Important information has been made available to the public by organizations representing farmers, ranchers, conservationists, and residents.By educating ourselves and taking action, we can each do our part to protect the Rocky Mountains and Alberta's water.

Coming Up

Public Health & Community Well-being

Coal mining can release harmful toxins into the air and water, affecting nearby communities and wildlife. By prioritizing clean water, fresh air, and healthy ecosystems, we can prevent long-term health risks and maintain a high quality of life for Albertans.

Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE)

Watershed & Environmental Protection

Coal mining poses a serious threat to Alberta’s watersheds, with risks of selenium contamination, disrupted water flow, and habitat destruction. Protecting rivers and freshwater ecosystems ensures clean drinking water, healthy fish populations, and sustainable environmental stewardship for future generations.

Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative

Agriculture & Land Protection

The Eastern Slopes provide vital grazing land and irrigation water for Alberta’s agricultural industry. Open-pit mining endangers farmland by depleting water resources, contaminating soil, and reducing the long-term viability of ranching and farming in the region.

Livingstone Landowners Group

Indigenous & Cultural Protection

For many Indigenous communities, the Eastern Slopes are not only a source of clean water and wildlife but also hold deep cultural and spiritual significance. Protecting these lands ensures the preservation of sacred sites, traditional knowledge, and Indigenous rights to steward the land.

Economic & Policy Advocacy

Sustainable industries like tourism, recreation, and agriculture provide long-term economic benefits, while coal mining offers short-lived profits at the cost of environmental damage. Advocating for policies that protect natural landscapes supports resilient local economies and future job growth.

Alberta Federation of Labour

General Environmental Advocacy

The fight against coal mining is part of a larger movement to safeguard Alberta’s natural heritage. Environmental organizations work to raise awareness, conduct research, and push for policy changes that protect biodiversity, clean energy solutions, and responsible land use.
